Transferring the human mind to a new brain isn’t a new idea in science fiction, and the latest version of this Promethean myth is the May film Criminal, starring Kevin Costner as a convict who receives the memories and skills of a dead CIA agent.
It’s the latest in a long line of stories and movies that prompt the question: might mind transfer be possible, given the advances we’ve seen in both neuroscience and computing?
In the mid 20th century computers were capturing the popular imagination and some scientists pointed out that the on/off state of neurons in your brain was similar to the 1/0 state of a binary computer bit.
