We all know the time administrative tasks take up is a necessary evil, but new research finds the problem is worse than we thought – one sector in a recent survey says almost half the workday is spent on it.
In other findings, nearly half of managers polled say it takes too long to find the data to produce reports and nearly three quarters say admin responsibilities mean less time for strategy that could expand business.
According to a new poll from operations, service and business management provider ServiceNow of nearly 1000 US and UK managers, administration tasks that are not core to their jobs took up almost two full days of the work week.
Rob Pickering, vice president of information technology at US travel, auto and financial services provider AAA Allied Group, agrees, saying that for one thing, we rely on email too heavily because of the constant vigilance it requires with no scalable visibility. “Each email sent and not responded to will require some form of follow up from the person asking, and with the additional variable of urgency, time can get swallowed up tracking down feedback and responses to keep work moving,” he says.
